♦ Matière colorante d'un beau rouge, extraite autrefois des racines de garance, aujourd'hui obtenue par synthèse.

● alizarine nom féminin Colorant végétal dérivé de l'anthracène, existant sous forme de glucoside dans la racine de garance et préparé aujourd'hui synthétiquement. (Premier colorant naturel synthétisé industriellement [C. Graebe, K. Liebermann, 1868], l'alizarine sert à teindre les fibres en rouge, brun ou violet selon le mordant utilisé.)
